What is TDS exactly?

TDS is the shorter form of Total Dissolved Solids. It reflects the total number of mobile particles(Organic and inorganic) in a given water volume.

What is ion?

Ions are electrically charged particles and the smallest particles that can be microscopically observed free moving in the water. Pure water can not conduct electricity as it has zero conductivity virtually.

If the free moving ions are present, then only water is electrically conductive. In general, all drinking water possesses ions in it as the purification process contains ions for keeping vital elements in drinking water.

How can we measure TDS?

The water purification process is very complicated but directly related to TDS measurement. The weight to weight ratio of ions to water is the actual measurement of PPM.

Instead of completely removing the TDS and then adding up the essential component with pure water, the purification process filtered out harmful agents in different layers. It reduces the less required elements and keeps the vital minerals and salts. TDS measurement usually can be calculated by the formula

  • TDS = KE * EC
  • KE= Correlational factor and
  • EC= conductivity quotient of Water or Electrical Conductivity

This is simply because you need to have a unit range of which you can safely drink water after purification. As the water treatment process decimates unwanted parts from the water and keeps only the filtered particle, which is indispensable for good health.

What is the minimum TDS level in drinking water?
